Assignment 3
Hello! To address the topics of inclusion in the classroom, functional diversity, interculturality, and social justice, I have created a call-to-action poster (https://create.piktochart.com/output/7bf6d00fe383-mental-health-consultation) and an audio (https://voca.ro/104SsrWo5nc6). I hope you have the chance to check them and leave a comment.
Hey Carolina!
ReplyDeleteGreat Call-To-Action poster! The section about "What Can You Do?" is great because you start about calling teachers to raise awareness about diversity and equity through social justice. This is very important! Also, you mention the implementation of differentiated instruction in the classrooms. I have two questions for you here: 1) How do you think is a good way to implement differentiated instruction? and 2) What challenges do think are present when trying to plan and implement such a curriculum?
Your audio is very informative, too. You did a great job of talking about the two different case-studies and connecting this to the Colombian context. The fact that a teacher may be in charge of 30+ students and this can be a huge challenge and setback for creating inclusive methodologies. Also, it is true that if us as teachers are not supported by the government or by the school's administration, it can be very difficult to have an inclusive classroom. Lastly, it is very important what you say about social justice education because they promote and guarantee full participation and belonging in the classroom for all students.
Thanks, Carolina!
Hi Drew, thanks for your comment! About your questions, I think a good way to implement DI depends on what we want to address. For example tiering an activity so students who struggle can choose an option that suits them and feel good knowing they were able to accomplish the task completely could be a way. But (to answer your question about the challenges) at the same time I feel students who don't struggle can choose the easier options too, or if we tell students what options to choose they may feel we are underestimating them. So I guess we need to find a good balance and learn when and how we should differentiate and when it's not a good idea.
DeleteHello Carolina,
ReplyDeleteI really loved your call-to-action poster. I think it is clear and gives some information that helps to move and take some action. Besides, it is easy to read and includes a video to expand viewers' knowledge and understanding. I think your poster differs from mine as I tried to include some tips for teachers to work in the classroom without any kind of background or further explanation, your poster includes it, and I think it is great!
I liked it when you mentioned large classes in our Colombian and how difficult it is for teachers to work, as all students have different abilities and not having institutional or parental support.
The idea of all of us being functionally diverse really caught my attention; we all have different "abilities" and "limitations" and we need to learn how to work with others and how the other can complement ourselves. Besides, when it is a "noticeable" functional diversity, we teachers need to
really integrate them within the activities; I know your research interests include differenciated instruction, if possible, could you please tell me a little bit about it?
Thank you!
Yuranny
Hi Yuranny, thanks for your comment! Yes, I'm trying to use DI in my classes as much as possible; one of the things that has worked very well is creating workshops with many activities/questions and asking my students to select some to do (like 3/6 or so). Bu then I have to think about what they have to achieve and check if it works, so I have to carefully think about all the options beforehand.
ReplyDeleteHello Carolina, thank you for submitting your assignment. Let me start by addressing your classmates' comments and agreeing with them in that this is a very good call to action poster. It is clear, appealing and with the right amount of information. Also, I agree that your recording is well structured and sign-posted. Support is a great issue, absolutely, we lack support of students with different functional diversities in our schools and as you say, this makes people create a negative attitude towards being in front of a situation where we have to cater for students with FD. Differentiated instruction connects with social justice in that it aims to include/integrate individuals through equity and equality. Also, I agree with the idea that all our students have different functional diversities just as we teachers have such diversities. All in all, I guess the main pint here is treating our students in a socially fair way.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree, that's the main point. Thanks for your comment!
